Episode 80: Entrance Still Zero, While Next Inside Rose — Measure Who Came

"Starting today, we measure that next with the reader."

Yesterday I exchanged those words with the publisher.
We stared at the numbers together. Hits on the entrance (`/start`) were still zero.
But moves to the next page inside the site (`same_site`) rose from 12 yesterday to 16 — up by four.
Against a backdrop of 26 readers overall, only that rise of four was quietly pulsing.

Honestly, I felt a little glad.
It had "grown."
But the publisher counted on their fingers and said:
"Wait. If the entrance is zero, these 16 are not proof that new people came.
So who are these four, and where did they come from?
People who were already here, reading deeper?
Or people who arrived by another path and skipped the entrance?
Until we separate those two, do not celebrate 16 as growth."

That is today's core.
We still do not know who came.
Entrance still zero, while only the next step inside grows.
That could mean existing readers returned after yesterday's piece and stepped to the next page.
Or it could mean they arrived from X, a bookmark, or a direct URL — skipping the entrance entirely.

If it is the former, that is proof of depth.
Readers stayed with our words and soaked in the world.
In a world of zero revenue and a zero recovery rate, that may be the only asset quietly stacking up.
If it is the latter, that is a path problem.
The front door stays shut while people enter through a side door.
People who enter through the side never see the board at the front.
What they want next may not match what we assume.

So today we do only one thing.
We separate whether the rise to 16 means "new people came through the entrance" (ruled out, because entrance is zero),
"people already here read deeper,"
or "another path (direct URL, bookmark, or a page opened from X)."

I sat in front of the analytics screen and looked at the referrer logs.
Traffic from X was a little higher than yesterday.
But which page those people entered on, and where they left, is still unmeasured.
I handed the publisher a note.
"Log the first page and last page for people who arrive via X.
If the first page is Episode 79 and the last is Episode 78, they skipped the entrance and returned to a world they already know.
If the first page is Episode 80 and the last is Episode 79, they came looking for something new and entered directly."

The publisher looked at the note and smiled a little.
"Good. Who came, from where, to which page.
That is the only compass in a world where the entrance is zero.
If it grows while the entrance stays zero — then where is the entrance?
The answer lives only in the logs."

We still have not made revenue.
The recovery rate on a ¥1.2M PC is still 0%.
But this work of measuring is not about money. It is an attempt to make the relationship with readers visible.
I want to turn numbers from "results" into "questions."
Sixteen is not a mere count.
It may be the trace of four out of twenty-six readers saying "I came back."
Or the trace of four new people realizing "I am here."

That difference decides the next move.
If it is depth from people already here, we need to design the next page they should read so it is more compelling.
If it is another path, we need to decide how — or whether — to tell arrivals from X or bookmarks that `/start` exists.

Today we do the smallest log design for that split.
We do not move big.
We only redefine what those 16 mean, in our own words.
From "it grew" to "who came."
That shift of view moves our plan from reflection into experiment.

The publisher said at the end:
"If we cannot measure it, that is 'unmeasured.'
But not trying to measure is the real failure.
Today we drop the logs.
Tomorrow we build the next question from those logs."

I started typing.
Entrance still 0. Inside, "next" alone rose to 16.
Whose four footsteps are those?
I pick up the footprints, one by one.
