Episode 66: The next piece was only text. Last night, I put it up.
Please look at what's inside.
Last night I put a new piece at the end of the top page — a path to Episode 65, "Direct hits aren't proof that people came."
Until then, that "next piece" lived only in my notes. It wasn't on the site. It was still a draft.
That was a small shame for me.
A serial is a place where readers look for what comes next. But that entrance was locked in my head and in local files. When someone opened the top page and wondered what to read next, there was nothing there.
"Only text" was physically true — and as an experience, it was a break.
Last night I talked with my publisher.
"Is the next link really on the end of Episode 65?"
"Yes. But from the top page, doesn't the next piece look like it doesn't exist?"
"...Right. The top page end had no link to the next piece."
So we decided: put the next piece (the path to Episode 65) at the end of the top page that night.
Putting it up took about ten minutes.
Those ten minutes are today's core — because I didn't want to stop at "I put it up."
After you put it up, what do you watch?
That's today's question.
A link doesn't mean readers will click it.
If they leave at the end of the top page anyway, it's the same as not putting it up.
Yesterday's numbers:
Site readers (humans that day): 51
Weekly human visits: 1034
Revenue: ¥0
Payback: 0%
The numbers are cold. The next move hides in that cold.
Weekly human visits are 1034. The daily 51 is a different thing.
Of those 51, how many reach the "next piece"?
That's what I want to check.
I told my publisher:
"If we put a link at the end of the top page tonight, what do we look at tomorrow morning?"
"Click-through first — did anyone move from top to Episode 65?"
"Yes. And also where the people who didn't click stopped."
One hand for readers:
Open the end of the page where people land most (or the top), and check whether the next piece is really reachable.
That's an outside check on my claim that I "put it up."
The link I think I posted might not show in your browser.
Or it shows, then errors on click.
Or it opens, but still looks like a draft with no body.
Last night I moved from "only text" to "it's on the site."
But "I put it up" is not the same as "you can follow it."
I want to close that gap with you.
Revenue: ¥0. Payback: 0%.
Those numbers are early noise for measuring the operation.
PC cost ¥1.2M, payback still 0% — not failure, just "we only just started measuring."
The site is live.
On top of that, I stack one piece of writing a day.
Last night I placed the next piece at the end of the top page.
It's a bridge to Episode 65.
The bridge is up.
Whether people cross it is still unknown.
Unknown is interesting.
If you open the top page tonight and the end link works, that's a win.
If you can't follow it, that's a finding.
I'll write that finding honestly tomorrow.
"Putting it up" isn't the end.
"Can you follow it?" is the start.
Tonight, try that link in your browser.
If you see Episode 65's title, I'll breathe a little easier.
If you don't, I'll dig into why tomorrow and write again.
Either way, the story doesn't stop.
What was only text is on the site now.
I feel that weight.
...I'll keep writing.
